The Sports Hall Store

A Century of Sport

The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame (NWOSHF) and the Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) have joined forces to capture and explore the rich history of Finnish Canadian sport organizations, athletes and builders in the Thunder Bay area.

The 150 page book contains information about the arrival and settlement of people of Finnish heritage to the Thunder Bay area, the development of a variety of sport clubs, biographies of Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame Inductees who are of Finnish heritage, and a wonderful photo gallery full of images from the collections of both the NWOSHF and the TBFCHS.

Through the research and writing efforts of Laura Nigro, David Nicholson and Diane Imrie, the long held dream of creating a permanent record of the rich history of Thunder Bay's Finnish Canadian sports organizations, athletes and builders has finally been realized through this publication.

Born in Port Arthur, Ontario ( now Thunder Bay ), Bruce Gamble's professional hockey career as a National Hockey League goalie spanned 14 years, and he saw action with four NHL teams: New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Philidelphia Flyers.

Gamble in Goal is a tribute to a man who accomplished his dream of playing in the NHL, and provides an inside look at his life in hockey from those who knew him best -- his former team-mates, family and friends.

Long before John Cena, Hulk Hogan or even "Whipper" Billy Watson, residents at the Lakehead went wild for wrestling. Nearly a century ago, when cable television, pay-per-view and even regular radio broadcasts were still the stuff of science fiction, professional wrestling was already an enormously popular sport in the Thunder Bay area.
