Heritage Classic Curling
When mixed doubles curling made its debut at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games Sports Hall of Fame Treasurer, Marlene Wright, thought it would be a perfect opportunity to combine an educational opportunity with a fundraising event. She invited Hall of Fame members Heather Houston and Rick Lang to get involved and serve as Honouary Chairs and our Heritage Classic Doubles Funspiel was born.
Our inaugural event was held on February 13th and 14th 2016 and welcomed 20 teams and started with a doubles curling clinic and the introduction of a number of Hall of Famers who came out to the event. In November of 2019, at our 5th Heritage Classic, Marlene, who was fighting cancer at the time, came to cheer on the curlers, unfortunately losing her battle just one month later.
After a brief hiatus, we welcomed back our Heritage Classic in 2024, hosting one event in March and one in November. In 2026 we switched it up a bit by partnering with the Fort William Curling Club to present the 8th edition of the Heritage Classic as a Stick Spiel. Special thanks to Justin Lewtas who coordinated the 2026 event and to Heather Houston for her support and amazing graphic design skills. Thanks as well to our Stickspiel event sponsor Superior Shores Gaming Association and to all of our participating teams.
