This exceptional builder gave of her time and talents to the sport of 5 pin bowling from the 1960s to the 2010s as a participant, coach, league executive, association member and volunteer, and as a strong advocate for bowling right up until her passing in 2015.
First taking to the sport as a teenager growing up in Red Rock in the late 1940s, her early involvement saw her serve as a youth bowler and pin-setter at her local alley. Advancing to the Red Rock Senior Mixed league, she joined the executive committee and became the president of the league during the 1960s. At the same time, her success on the lanes saw her become a top bowler earning a spot on multiple teams that travelled to Eastern and Western Canadian championships throughout the 1960s and 70s.
Getting involved with the Thunder Bay 5 Pin Bowlers Association (TB5PBA) starting in the 1970s, her commitment to that organization lasted through to the 2010s and saw her take on many executive positions including a term as President, time as Secretary, and as chair of membership and awards.
Passing along her bowling knowledge to others, she coached a number of teams during the 1970s taking them to provincial and national competitions, and served as a team manager for Northern Ontario teams throughout the 2000s.
First serving as a Thunder Bay District delegate and secretary at the Northern Ontario level, when the Northern Ontario 5 Pin Bowlers Association (NO5PBA) was reorganized to combine bowling leagues across the north, she was elected the first secretary-treasurer, and remained active on the executive for the next thirty years.
Well known and respected across the country for her dedication and knowledge, she was recruited to serve on the Constitution Committee for the newly formed Canadian 5 Pin Bowlers' Association (C5PBA). In 1988 she became the first woman to be elected to an executive position, serving as 2nd Vice President from 1988-91 and as 1st Vice-President from 1992-94. During her time on the board she undertook a fundraising program by creating a cookbook Striking Dishes from Coast to Coast, which sold close to 7,000 copies.
Her high level of dedication earned her Life Memberships in the Thunder Bay, Northern Ontario and Canadian 5 pin bowlers' associations, and induction into the NO5PBA Hall of Fame, all fitting tributes for her role in ensuring that sporting opportunities existed for people of all ages and abilities through her many years of volunteer efforts.
