It was while growing up in Fort William during the 1940s and 50s that this dedicated builder first became involved in sport, going on to serve in a number of capacities over the next six decades.

As an athlete he spent time in the boxing ring, rowing in NWIRA events and claiming top defensive lineman honours with the Selkirk Rams football team. In was on the ice, however, that he truly shone, making his way up through the Fort William minor, junior and senior hockey leagues. Playing for such teams as the Fort William Hurricanes and Beavers he earned numerous honours including MVP, All-Star, top scorer and most gentlemanly player awards.

Following his time on the ice, he moved behind the bench, going on to coach in the Fort William Hockey Association for over thirty years, the majority of which was spent with the Fort William Columbus Canadiens. A number of his players went on to enjoy careers in the professional ranks with others giving back as coaches and volunteers.

In 1967, he coached the Canadiens Midget team to the City title, earning him top coaching honours in the Fort William Minor Hockey Association. He also served as the Manager of the Fort William Nationals, the Thunder Bay representatives at the Canadian Centennial Midget Hockey Championship held in Kingston.

The 1970s saw him behind the bench with the Fort William Canadian Tire team, leading their Midget B squad to league honours. He spent time taking over the reins of the Canadians Junior A squad, while simultaneously serving as President of the Thunder Bay Columbus Club Hockey Association.

For his efforts he was presented with the CAHA (now Hockey Canada) Minor Hockey Meritorious Service Award in 1971-72 by the Fort William Minor Hockey Association and received the 2002 George Rowe Memorial Builder of Sport Award.

His contributions to sport were not just on the playing fields and in arenas, it was also through his mentorship and financial support for athletes and sports teams in Thunder Bay, Dryden and throughout the region, making him a builder in the truest sense of the word.
