Getting his start in hockey as a player in the minor and high school programs of Dryden during the 1960s, this future coach and NHL scout went on to be involved in the game over six decades. His net-minding skills saw him guarding the pipes for the Brandon Wheat Kings and Bowling Green State University, winning a Central Collegiate Hockey Association title and earning a 1972-73 CCHA Second Team All-Conference Award and rounding out his time with the London Kings Senior A hockey team.
Following his playing days, he moved behind the bench as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan and the University of North Dakota, where he helped lead their team to the 1981-82 NCAA Division 1 hockey title.
His junior hockey coaching career began in the Western Hockey League serving as head coach of the Regina Pats from 1982-83. Moving into the Ontario Hockey League, he spent three seasons as the head coach of the London Knights, helping to develop such players as future NHL player and hockey executive Brendan Shanahan. From 1986 to 1989 he was general manager and head coach of the Soo Greyhounds, rounding out his OHL coaching career with Newmarket and Sarnia in the mid-1990s.
Moving into the professional ranks, he became a scout in the NHL starting with the Quebec Nordiques from 1989-93. From 1995-97 he made his first stop in Ottawa as a scout with the Senators and spent the next two seasons with the St. Louis Blues.
When Columbus entered the NHL he was one of the first people hired, going on to serve with the Bluejackets from 1999-2011 taking on a variety of positions including Director of Amateur Scouting, Director of Player Personnel & Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager.
Rejoining the Ottawa Senators scouting staff in 2013, he helped build them into one of the NHL's up-and-coming franchises over the past decade, which he continues to do as their current Head Scout.
Having travelled the globe looking for talent and watching upwards of 220 games a year, this master scout has produced results, having a hand in drafting the likes of Rick Nash, Daniel Alfredsson, Owen Nolan and Brady Tkachuk. Described as the quintessential scout and respected talent evaluator with the desire to always help players find their way in the game, he is a builder of sport in the truest sense of the word.
