A native of Fort William, he excelled in all sports particularly hockey, baseball and football. He played semi-pro hockey with New York and was one of the first Canadians to try out with the Chicago White Sox baseball team. His first love was football and he spent eleven seasons first with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and then the Calgary Stampeders.
