Biography

For over 50 years this builder has dedicated himself to ensuring that sporting opportunities have existed for his community. Starting in the 1940s as an executive member of the Port Arthur Mustangs, he served with the club for 6 seasons.

As an active sports participant Ray joined the Port Arthur Curling Club in 1936 and has been a member ever since. His contributions have included helping to organize the first Mixed Curling League and taking on the chairmanship of a number of committees. At the executive level, he served as President of the Port Arthur Curling Club and the Northwestern Ontario Curling Association and as a delegate to the Canadian Curling Association. In 1968 he was Chairman of the Canadian School Boys Curling championships held in Port Arthur and was active with the Grand Prix Curling Committee for a number of years.

Ray's affiliation with the Strathcona Men's Golf Club in Port Arthur included serving as secretary and treasurer from 1950-1960, as well as, President in 1961 and with the Strathcona Invitational Tournament. Dedicated to youth sports, Ray coordinated the Junior Program for the Thunder Bay District Golf Association for a number of years often travelling with qualifiers to the Ontario junior championships each year.

A volunteer for all seasons, Ray was also active in the sport of hockey volunteering with the Thunder Bay Twins for many years, serving as an executive member and President and as a great fundraiser and booster for the club as season ticket chairman.

For his service to others, Ray has been justly presented many honours by the organizations that he has helped over the years. He has received Honourary Life Memberships with the Port Arthur Curling Club, Northwestern Ontario Curling Association and the Strathcona Men's Golf Club. Recognition for a job well done by a fine gentleman and builder of sports.
